Convention on the Law of the Sea
After 14 years of work (1968) on December 10, 1982 the Convention on the Law of the Sea was signed by more than 150 countries. This international policy developed traditional rules for the use of the oceans and at the same time introduced new legal concepts and management and addressed new concerns. It established the governing all aspects of ocean space, such as delimitation, environmental control, marine scientific research, economic and commercial activities, transfer of technology and the settlement of disputes relating to ocean matters.

The Law of the Sea Convention defines the rights and responsibilities of nations with respect to their use of the world's oceans, establishing guidelines for businesses, the environment, and the management of marine natural resources. It replaced previous treaties dealing with the sea and rights.

The United Nations is responsible for the regulation and enforcement of this legislation.
