1
Human Regulation and Reproduction
2
The Endocrine System Sends chemical messages (hormones) through your blood that affect specific tissues. Fight or Flight response!
3
Endocrine Glands Release hormones (chemicals) into the blood stream.
Regulate Internal environment Adaptation to stressful situations Promotion of growth and development Coordination of circulation and digestion
4
Male Testes (gland) Produce testosterone (hormone)
controls the development and maintenance of male sexual traits. production of sperm.
5
Female Ovaries (gland) Produce estrogen and progesterone (hormones)
Regulate the reproductive cycle (menstruation). Produce and maintain female sex characteristics.
6
The Reproductive System
Males and females have different structures specialized in their roles in reproduction.
7
Male Reproductive System
8
Female Reproductive System
9
Body proportions change as people age.
Human Life Stages Body proportions change as people age.
10
Pregnancy Sperm penetrates the egg and creates a zygote.
The zygote moves along the oviduct to the uterus and attaches to the wall of the uterus. Pregnancy is the period of development from fertilization to birth and takes about 9 months.
12
The Embryo After the zygote attaches to the wall of the uterus it is known as an embryo. The placenta develops and an umbilical cord connects to the embryo. This is where the embryo receives all its nutrients. Drugs, toxins, and disease organisms can pass from the mother to the embryo through the umbilical cord.
13
The Embryo During the 3rd week, a thin membrane called the amniotic sac begins to form around the embryo. Major organs form The heart structure begins to beat. Head with eyes, nose, and mouth form. Fingers and toes develop.
15
The Fetus After the first two months of pregnancy, the developing embryo is called a fetus. By the fourth month, the sex of the fetus can be determined. Growth and development continue until birth.
16
Stages After Birth Infancy – birth to around 18 months
“newborn” period (neonatal) Rapid growth Childhood – 18 months until around 12 years of age. Development of abilities to speak, read, write, and reason
17
Stages After Birth (cont)
Adolescence – approximately Puberty Adulthood – approximately 18 – 60 Growth of muscular and skeletal systems stop Older Adulthood – 60 - ? Overall decline in physical body systems
