1 TYPES OF ENERGY Mechanical, Electromagnetic (Light), Electrical,
Chemical and Thermal, Sound, Nuclear

2 What is Mechanical Energy?
Energy due to a object’s motion (kinetic) or position (potential). The bowling ball has mechanical energy. When the ball strikes the pins, mechanical energy is transferred to the pins!

3 Examples of Mechanical Energy

4 What is Electromagnetic Energy?
Light energy Includes energy from gamma rays, xrays, ultraviolet rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwave and radio bands

5 What is Electrical Energy?
Energy caused by the movement of electrons Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy

6 What is Chemical Energy?
Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck.

7 Examples of Chemical Energy

8 What is Thermal Energy? Heat energy
The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms are. A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement.

9 What is Sound energy? Energy that you hear

10 What is Nuclear energy? Energy produced when atoms are split. A nuclear reactor, or power plant, is a series of machines that can control nuclear fission to produce electricity

11 ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY
QUIZ TIME! What type of energy cooks food in a microwave oven? ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY What type of energy is the spinning plate inside of a microwave oven? MECHANICAL ENERGY

12 QUIZ TIME! Electrical energy is transported to your house through power lines. When you plug an electric fan to a power outlet, electrical energy is transformed into what type of energy? MECHANICAL ENERGY

13 QUIZ TIME! What energy transformation occurs when an electric lamp is turned on? ELECTRICAL ENERGY ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY

14 What types of energy are shown below?
Mechanical and Thermal Energy (Don’t forget friction)

15 What type of energy is shown below?
Chemical Energy

16 What types of energy are shown below?
Electrical, Mechanical and Electromagnetic Energy

17 What type of energy is shown below?
Chemical Energy (yummy)

18 What type of energy is shown below?
Thermal Energy

19 Energy transformations
One of the most common energy transformations is the transformation between potential energy and kinetic energy. In waterfalls such as Niagara Falls, potential energy is transformed to kinetic energy. The water at the top of the falls has gravitational potential energy. As the water plunges, its velocity increases. Its potential energy becomes kinetic energy.

20 What type of energy is shown below?
Any object that rises or falls experiences a change in its kinetic and gravitational potential energy. Look at the orange. When it moves, the orange has kinetic energy. As it rises, it slows down. Its potential energy increases as its kinetic energy decreases.

21 Conservation of energy
If you set a spinning top in motion, will the top remain in motion forever? No, it will not. Then what happens to its energy? Is the energy destroyed? Again, the answer is no. The law of conservation of energy states that when one form of energy is transformed to another, no energy is destroyed in the process.

22 Energy and friction So what happens to the energy of the top?
As the top spins, it encounters friction with the floor and friction from the air. Whenever a moving object experiences friction, some of its kinetic energy is transformed into thermal energy. So, the mechanical energy of the spinning top is transformed to thermal energy. The top slows and eventually falls on its side, but its energy is not destroyed—it is transformed.

23 Draw a flow map showing the flow of energy transformations in a car from starting vehicle to driving. You should have 5 different types of energy.
