2 The Scene (6 points) You pull up on the scene of a shooting, police have secured the area. Before exiting the rig you do what? You take BSI precautions. Describe your next steps. Determine the scene is safe Determine NOI or MOI Determine number of patients Request additional help if needed Consider stabilization of spine

3 Initial Assessment (3 points)
As you approach the patient you do what? Form a general impression Determine responsiveness – Level of consciousness (AVPU) Determine Chief complaint – apparent life threats

Continuing your assessment, you should access what? Assessment Indicates appropriate O2 therapy Assures adequate ventilation Injury Management Assess Airway and Breathing Assesses – controls major bleeding Assesses pulse Assess Skin (Color, temp, condition) Assess Circulation Identifies patient priorities and makes transport decision

5 Focused History and Physical Exam – Rapid assessment (3 point)
Begin your assessment. Selects appropriate assessment – focused or rapid assessment. Obtains or directs assistance to obtain baseline vital signs. Obtains SAMPLE history.

6 Detailed Physical Exam (18 point)
Begin your exam, remember DCAP-BTLS. Inspects and palpates the scalp and ears Assesses the eyes Assesses the facial, oral and nasal areas Assess the head Inspects and palpates the neck Assesses for JVD Assesses for tracheal deviation Assess the neck Inspects Palpates Auscultates Assess the chest

7 Detailed Physical Exam Cont…
Continue your exam. Assesses the abdomen Assesses the pelvis Verbalizes assessment of Genitalia- perineum Assess the abdomen and pelvis Assess the extremities 1 point for each extremity, includes inspection, palpation, assessment of motor, sensory and circulatory function. Assesses the thorax Assesses the lumbar region Assess the posterior Manages secondary injuries and wounds appropriately. Verbalizes reassessment of the vital signs.

8 Critical Criteria Failure to perform any of the following will result in a fail. Did not take or verbalize BSI precautions Did not determine scene is safe Did not assess for spinal protection. Did not provide for spinal protection when indicated. Did not provide high concentration of oxygen
