November 11, 1920: Creation of National Advisory Board on Highway Research
Coordinate, assist highway research conducted by BPR, state highway departments, manufacturers, academic and commercial laboratories
Encompass research on vehicle, road, road user, environment, interrelationships
Treat research, application, and education as one process; highway official, educator, and researcher have stake in the total effort
Take both responsive and anticipatory actions
Part of the NAS/NRC: volunteer service to country, independent, objective, non-partisan

4. TRB/HRB and AASHTO/AASHO
1924: TRB State Reps started as 45 state “Contact Men”
1927: AASHO Research Activities Committee
1936: HRB Director became secretary
1931: Joint HRB/AASHO/ARBA sponsorship of Bartlett Award
1945: Executive Secretary of AASHO becomes ex officio member of HRB Executive Committee
1932: first joint HRB-AASHO project on Roadside Development
: role in state road tests, etc.

1962: NCHRP established

Resurrected recently: you should have received your report just before this meeting
Some of the data were not available so there are some estimated included
We are discovering that some data may not be captured in our system so the ROIs are likely lower than they should be
We will continue working on this

How do RAC managers reach out and get younger staff involved?
State reps could explain “friending TRB” to DOT staff; offer “TRB Annual Meeting 101” training
Make videoconference an option for panel members who can’t travel (also cuts costs).
“Mentor” panel/committee involvement.
Re: getting young professionals involved, use a Facebook style environment.
