“Water, water everywhere”
Properties of Water “Water, water everywhere”
2
Polarity and Hydrogen Bonds
Water molecules are polar because there are uneven distributions of electrons between the oxygen and hydrogen atoms
3
Polarity gives water two important characteristics
Cohesion – attraction between molecules of the SAME substance (Coworkers, Cooperate) Adhesion – attraction between molecules of different substances
4
Water is not always pure….
Mixture – composed of two or more substances that are physically mixed but not chemically combined (can be separated) Solution – all components are distributed evenly throughout a solution (saltwater) Solute – stuff being dissolved (salt) Solvent – stuff doing the dissolving
5
Cont… Suspension – the material in the water does not completely dissolve but the small particles remain “suspended” (ex. Blood)
6
PH Acids – any compound that forms H+ ions in solution
Ex.. Tomato juice, Lemon juice, Stomach acid Bases – a compound that produces OH- ions in solution Ex.. Bleach, Ammonia, Soap, Sea water
7
PH Scale 7 = neutral < 7 = acidic > 7 = basic
8
PH cont… Buffers – weak acids or bases that help maintain an internal pH of inside living organisms. Sudden spikes or dips in the body pH can lead to serious problems or even death.
