1 PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE Understanding the difference between a tense sentence and a mood sentence.

2 Compare the Indicative (tense) with the Subjunctive Mood:
Tense(Indicative) has: Mood has: Fact, no particular feeling Feeling, emotions certainty, no doubt uncertainty, doubt Basically states the time of the action, present, past, future etc. Basically states a want, desire, wish, hope (a feeling) regarding another’s actions

3 She translates her verbs now.
Look again… She translates her verbs now. We demand (that) Chelsea translate the book.

4 FORMING A REGULAR PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE SENTENCE:
What you need to know: 1. Regular Subjunctive sentences have two clauses, independent and dependent. We hope that she eats lunch here. 2. Regular Present Subjunctive sentences contain two different subjects. 3. Regular Present Subjunctive SPANISH sentences use the conjunction “que.” (sometimes the word “that” is not said in English but MUST be written in Spanish. 4. Regular Present Subjunctive sentences have two verbs and a tense and a mood. First verb=Present Tense Second verb=Subjunctive Mood

5 INDICATIVE OR SUBJUNCTIVE?
Try the following examples: First, determine if it is Subjunctive or not…. Ex. 1 Juan is afraid that Luisa does not have the homework. Ex. 2 Do you (Ud.) feel like singing on Monday? Ex. 3 I suggest the students listen well today. Ex. 4 Is he saying that we are mean? Ex. 5 They are proud that she passes the test. Ex. 6 The class is sad Mrs. Turnbull is not here today.

6 LA TAREA Escribe en su cuaderno: All may NOT be subjunctive!
We recommend that Mrs. Turnbull give Pat a lot of homework. Do you (informal) prefer the ugly boys talk to Emma on Tuesday? The school prohibits that the students have fun everyday. They ask (request) that Sidney listen carefully. Frank insists that his bag is in his locker. I am afraid that Hannah is losing “Uno.” Do we hope to study Spanish for four more years? Mrs. Turnbull demands that the students are nice. Do you-all want/wish (that) Shannon win the money? The mean teacher(m) advises Elyse to do the chapter for homework.
