Americans Create A Republic
1781: the thirteen states ratify the Articles of Confederation The Articles are the new laws for the US (now a Republic), each state will get one representative in new Congress Problem: 1) hard to govern the new country since 9 of the 13 states had to agree on laws, collecting taxes, and trade 2) States also can pass own laws and ignore the Articles Constitutional Convention: 55 delegates meet in Philadelphia to fix the Articles or write a new constitution

Federalists=want a new constitution with a strong federal gov and separation of power (Mont) Anti-federalists= strong state govs, with individual rights (L & V) Discuss: Which side do you agree with?

A New Constitution 1787: Washington helps the two groups compromise, they pass a federal constitution with a Bill of Rights Washington, who was offered the title of King would turn that down and will be elected the nation’s first President (1789)
