2 During Reconstruction, the Southern states became known as the Solid South because they consistently supported the Democratic Party.

3 In 1876, Samuel Tilden (a Democrat) won the popular vote to become president, but lost a disputed electoral vote to Rutherford B. Hayes (a Republican). Samuel Tilden

Under the Compromise of 1877, the Democrats in Congress agreed to the election of Hayes as president . . . President Rutherford B. Hayes (1877–1881)

5 . . . and the Republicans in Congress promised to withdraw federal troops from the South, which ended Reconstruction in 1877.

6 After the end of Reconstruction, African Americans found that gaining equal rights was very difficult.

7 Jim Crow laws, voting restriction laws, and actions of the Ku Klux Klan limited the rights of African Americans in the South (until the 1960s).
