3. White Southern Republicans
Many whites in the South felt that any southerner who helped the Republicans was a traitor.
Many were known as scalawags
Scalawags- derogatory word/slang term to insult a white southern republican

4. Northern Republicans Were strongly disliked by Southerners.
Became known as carpetbaggers
Carpetbaggers- northerners who came to the South to take advantage of their troubles

5. African Americans Earned the right to vote as well as run for office.
Still faced many hardships including racism, poverty, and a continuing struggle for equality.

6. Conservatives or Southern Democrats
Conservatives- resented changes imposed by Congress and enforced by the military.
Wanted South to change as little as possible.
Hated northerners that came into the South and supported the Republican movements.

7. Secret Societies Ku Klux Klan
KKK-worked to keep African Americans and white Republicans out of office.
Threatened Freedmen and Republicans and performed acts of violence.

8. “Nothing But Freedom”
Many freedmen felt as though they received nothing except their freedom.
Still felt they had no real rights and many were forced to return to the plantations for work.
Sharecroppers- rented and farmed a plot of land and the planter provided seed, fertilizer, and tools in return for a share of the crop at harvest time.

9. Sharecroppers
Sharecroppers would work the land in return for a place to live and supplies to farm.
Many of these sharecroppers were locked into a cycle of poverty where they could not pay back their debts.
