Four of today’s 15 elementary schools were already operating in All were within 1.5 miles of KU’s Fraser Hall. Between 1953 and 1960, Lawrence added six more within that same distance from Fraser.

Hillcrest, Sunset Hills, East Heights, Kennedy, Centennial and Schwegler

In 1967, Lawrence added an 11th elementary school within the same radius, Broken Arrow.

That same year, Deerfield was built.

After 1967, Lawrence did not build another elementary school for 21 years, building Quail Run in 1988.

In 1994, Sunflower and Prairie Park were built.

Langston Hughes was added in 1999 bringing the total number of elementary schools to 19.

Grant closed in 2002.

Centennial, East Heights and Riverside closed in 2003 reducing the total to the 15 elementary schools we have today. Nine are within the original 1.5 miles of Fraser, two fewer than in 1967.

This shows the circle from Fraser Hall laid on a map with a white dot for each elementary student. There are about 1,600 students inside the circle. This is about 29% of our 5,200 elementary students.
