Warm Up 11/1/13 One of the most famous studies conducted on deviance is a longitudinal study that assessed subjects who has watched large amounts of television by age eight. Researchers compared the behavior of these individuals with that of a control group. Members of the control group has watched little TV at an early age. Subjects that watched more TV displayed more violent behavior by age 19; several were incarcerated by the age of 30. This study is the most conclusive evidence that exposure to TV violence at an early age can have long-term behavioral effects. WHAT DO YOU THINK???

11/4/13 Warm Up Rosa Parks act of deviance is noted as the launching point for the civil rights movement in the United States. What other historical acts of deviance later came to be known as heroic acts? What do these now-heroic acts suggest about the perception of deviance?

EXAMPLES Boston Tea Party The American Revolution
Hiding of Jews during the Holocaust The acts were deviant at the time because they were labeled deviant. Today the acts are heroic because we label them as such

Warm Up 11/5/13 There are many theories about why crime exists. Why do you believe that crime exists at a higher level with people with lower social standing?

Warm Up 11/6/13 What are your thoughts about the assertion that crime levels decreased in the 1990’s because of abortion? Do you believe this to be true? If it is true does it change your thoughts about abortion one way or the other?

Warm Up 11/12/13 Describe how your project went? Did you experience any surprises? Did you get the reaction you thought? If you could do it differently, what would you do?

Warm-Up 11/13/13 Grab a book and turn to page 223 and respond to the two questions after reading the Case Study: Saints and Roughnecks.

11/15/13 There are currently 4 justifications for Punishment of deviant acts: Retribution Deference Rehabilitation Societal Protection Describe each of these punishiments and which do you believe is the best?

For Justifications for Punishment
Retribution The oldest justification for punishment Punishment is society’s revenge for a moral wrong In principle, punishment should be equal in severity to the crime itself. Deterrence An early modern approach Crime is considered social distribution, which society acts to control. People are viewed as rational and self-interested; deterrence works because the pain of punishment outweighs the pleasure of crime. Rehabilitation A modern strategy linked to the development of social sciences. Crime and other deviance are viewed as the result of social problems (poverty) or personal problems (mental illness). Societal Protection A modern approach easier to carry out than rehabilitation. Even if society is unable or unwilling to rehabilitation offenders or reform social conditions, people are protected by the imprisonment or execution of the offender.

Warm-Up Between the years of 1985 and the number of prison inmates under the age of 18 more than doubled. More states are now allowing people under the age of 18 to be tried as adults, depending on the type of crime committed. The thinking behind this trend is that if states take away a youth’s minor status, and they are tried as adults, they will be more accountable for the crime committed. What do you think??
