Cezanne His life and Work
2
Cezanne’s life Cezanne was born in France in 1839.
He was a solitary man and lived most of his life in Aix-en-Provence, a town in the south of France where he was born. He came from a wealthy family which meant he didn’t have to rely on selling paintings. He died in 1906.

Cezanne’s artist career
In 1861 he went to Paris to study painting. He was influenced by the Impressionists and was friends with the painter Pissarro. He started exhibiting with the Impressionists but then went back to Aix where he continued to paint and changed his style. He once said that he wished to turn Impressionism into solid and enduring, like the art of museums. After his one-man exhibition in 1895, Cezanne became highly respected and influenced many other artists including the Cubists.
4
Cezanne’s Style The Impressionists were trying to paint the effects of light, but Cezanne was trying to paint form (shape). He wanted his pictures to look solid without using the traditional methods of perspective and shading, instead he uses pure colour. His brushwork was similar to the Impressionists.

Cezanne’s Subject Matter
Cezanne painted landscapes of places close by Aix-en-Provence. His still- life paintings are thought to be his best as they show solid form very clearly. Cezanne also painted some portraits.
