Ethos the appeal to personal character, trustworthiness, and credibility goal is to convince people you are someone worth listening to because people tend to believe people whom they respect or trust examples: “Trust me, I’m a doctor.” celebrity or character endorsements someone who “has been there”

Goal is to elicit an emotional response of some kind Can be negative: anger, suspicion, jealousy, fear, etc. Can be positive: love, hope, inspiration, humor, etc. Any kind of “aww” moment, heart-warming, touching Nostalgia – things were better back in the “good ol days”

Assignment you and a partner need to find four commercials. 2 need to appeal primarily to Ethos 2 need to appeal primarily to Pathos write down a summary of each commercial – what are they selling? what happens in the commercial? what are the key words or catch-phrases they use? explain how these commercials show an appeal to ethos or pathos.
