1 Daily Science What would the bacterial name be of a rod shaped, double paired bacteria? Answer: diplobacillus What would the bacterial name be of a sphere shaped, chained bacteria? Answer: Streptococcus What is the most common bacteria? Answer: Eubacteria What are 2 helpful uses of bacteria? Answer: food/beverages, cosmetics, water purification, decomposition

2 Antibiotic Resistance
Biology I

3 Antibiotic Resistance
Antibiotic – medicine made to fight bacterial infections. Antibacterial – commercial substances made to kill harmful bacteria. Antibiotic Resistance – the ability of a microorganism to withstand the effects of antibiotics and antibacterial substances. Bacteria that are resistant to multiple antibiotics/antibacterial substances are superbugs.

4 Antibiotic Resistance
How does it work? Weak bacteria get killed off when exposed to antibiotics or antibacterial substances. Stronger bacteria survive longer. If not exposed to antibiotics or antibacterial substances for long enough, the stronger bacteria will stay alive. These stronger bacteria then reproduce and/or share their genes via conjugation.

5 Antibiotic Resistance

6 Antibiotic Resistance
Antibiotic resistance occurs in two ways: Naturally through evolution (changing over time). As the result of environmental pressures (increased exposure to antibiotics and antibacterial substances).

7 Antibiotic Resistance

8 Antibiotic Resistance
Examples of Resistant Bacteria: Staph Infections –Staphylococcus aureus The first antibiotic resistant bacteria – found to be resistant to penicillin just four years after its development Treated with methicillin and oxacillin MRSA – Methicllin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus Pencillin-Resistant Pneumonia – Streptococcus pneumoniae Tuberculosis – Mycobacterium tuberculosis Salmonella Gonorrhea

9 Antibiotic Resistance
How do humans impact antibiotic resistance? Overuse of Antibiotics Misuse of Antibiotics Take all of your antibiotics! Antibacterial Hand Soap, Personal Hygiene Products, and Cleaning Supplies Antibiotics Given to Livestock
