The Cell Structures & Functions
3
Cells Are prokaryotic or eukaryotic
Prokaryotic cells have no nucleus (blue green algae, bacteria) Eukaryotic cells have a true nucleus and organelles surrounded by membranes
4
Cytoplasm Cytoplasm is the substance that fills the inside of a cell, and contains cell structures.
5
Cytoplasm Cytoplasm is sort of like jello inside of the cell membrane.
6
The Nucleus Found in eukaryotic cells The control center of the cell
Contains chromosomes, the genetic blueprints of the cell (DNA or chromatin) Separated from the rest of the cell by a membrane called the nuclear envelope
7
The Nucleus Contains a cellular material called nucleoplasm (sort of like cytoplasm)
8
Cell Membrane The membrane of a cell allows some things to go through it, and keeps others out
9
Golgi Apparatus The Golgi apparatus is a series of smooth, stacked membranous sacs.
10
Golgi Apparatus It is the packaging and shipping center of the cell.
11
Endoplasmic Reticulum
The E.R. transfers materials throughout the inside of the cell
12
Mitochondria Mitochondria are tiny sausage-shaped structures found in the cytoplasm of the cell, and are responsible for energy production
13
Vacuoles Vacuoles are used for storage of waste, food, or water
14
Lysosomes Digestion and break down of waste, worn out cell parts, and foreign substances
15
Ribosomes Makes proteins needed by the cell
16
Centrioles Involved in helping a cell to copy itself
17
Chloroplasts Chloroplasts are where photosynthesis takes place.
Found only in plant cells.
18
Chloroplasts Traps sunlight energy Makes sugar (food) for the plant.
19
Cell Wall Stiff, rigid, nonliving.
Provides support so that the plant can grow tall and protection. Found only in plant cells.
