Rights of Townspeople Trade & cities grow together
Townspeople did not fit into the manorial system Made living by making and trading goods Lords would grant Charters Written statement of the town’s rights They would gain 4 basic rights Freedom Exemption Town Justice Commercial privileges

4 Rights Freedom- Anyone who lived in a town for a year and a day became free. This included serfs who escaped from a manor to a town Exemption- Townspeople won the right of bearing exempt, or free, from ever having to work on the manor.

4 Rights Town Justice- Towns had their own courts. Leading citizens tried cases that involved townspeople. Commercial Privileges- Townspeople could sell goods freely in the town market. They could also charge tolls to outsiders who wanted to trade there.

Guilds Merchant Guild- sole right to trade if you were part of that town. (tight-knit group) Craft Guild- shoemaker, weaving. (set wages, prices, working conditions) Apprentice- parents paid to put him into a master workers house. (journey man) Merchants and master workers- became middle class. (between the class of nobles and peasant and unskilled workers.

Towns Offered a chance for change in a serfs life.
Black Death- plague began in Asia/China and spread along the busy trade routes. Came into Europe through Italy. Black rats on the ship carried the disease Flea bites- main reason Rats came from Asia

Nostradamus He stated that exercise would help a person fight against the Plague. Keep the body healthy and it has the ability to fight Fresh air was an effective way to fight the plague People would often stay inside and close their windows and this would increase the strength of the Plague.

100 Years’ War War between England and France Use of new weapons
The war lasted 116 years Mainly small raids Use of new weapons Long Bow- could fire fast and up to 200 yards. England House of commons would gain more power as a result of the war

Great Schism Church was divided into 2 and sometimes 3 parts 1377-1417
Each Pope would gain political support from different leaders Church Council would meet in 1414 to end the Schism. Removed two of the Popes and one resigned Elected a new Pope
