Lesson Starter What is pollination?
What are the differences between wind and insect pollinated plants? What does the ovule become after fertilisation? What does the ovary become after fertilisation?
2
Sexual & Asexual reproduction
Lesson 4
3
Lesson 4- learning intention
Sexual reproduction in mammals Label the male and female reproductive organs Discuss fertilisation in animals
4
What are the sex cells in humans?
Sexual reproduction Almost all animals reproduce sexually (including humans) Sexual reproduction involves sex cells (gametes) What are the sex cells in humans?
5
Sexual reproduction: Copy
Almost all animals reproduce through sexual reproduction which involves sex cells (gametes) In humans the male sex cell is the sperm and the female sex cell is the egg
6
Human sex cells
7
Human sex cells Draw amd label the diagrams in your jotter Head Sperm
Nucleus Tail Draw amd label the diagrams in your jotter Egg Cell membrane Cytoplasm containing food Nucleus
8
Fertilisation More detail later
Fertilisation will occur when the nucleus of the sperm cell fuses with the nucleus of the egg cell, forming a zygote. In humans, fertilisation happens in the oviduct (aka fallopian tube)
9
Reproductive organs Both male and females have different reproductive organs Each part has a different job to do
10
The male reproductive organs

13
Complete Structure Function Penis Deposits sperm in the female Testes
Sperm is produced Sperm duct Carries sperm from testes to penis

16
Complete Structure Function Oviduct Ovary
Fertilised egg implants into lining and foetus develops here Receives sperm from the male
17
Complete Structure Function Oviduct Where fertilisation occurs Ovary
Produces egg cells Uterus (womb) Fertilised egg implants into lining and foetus develops here Vagina Receives sperm from the male
18
Animal Fertilisation Fertilisation is when the nucleus of the egg and nucleus of the sperm FUSE together- a zygote is formed The zygote contains a full set of chromosomes- half from the sperm and half from the egg
