3 Accessing Canvas Access the Canvas Dashboard link through My Sac State ( Alternatives: Log in at or get the Canvas Teacher app for your mobile device.

4 Course Building Strategies Faculty resources (www.csus.edu/canvas)
Build from Scratch Start fresh with a blank shell and build your Canvas course. Re-build a Migrated Course Import all content from a migrated course into your Canvas course shell and clean up/re-organize content. Hybrid Approach Start from scratch in Canvas and import some migrated content (e.g., assignments, files, quizzes).

5 Quality Matters (QM) Template
Templates available in Canvas Commons – search for “Sac State” (created by CTL)

6 Adding and Organizing Content
Chunk content and provide course structure via Modules Week, Topic, Unit, etc. Links to Files, Pages, Assignments (assignments, discussions, quizzes), External URL/Tool Demo Canvas course ("Bb Migration Sample 1 Edited“) to show modules and other content that we mention in content organization slide. If needed, can show SacCT course (“Bb to Canvas Test Course”).

8 Assignments - Overview
Access from Assignments or Modules tools. Activity Types within Assignments Assignments No submission, Online, On paper, External Tool – e.g. Office365, publishers, Turnitin Discussions Quizzes

9 Quizzes Tests migrate well from SacCT (Blackboard)
Review quiz settings, questions (e.g. images within text) and points, question groups and test banks Question Sets  Question Groups (see quiz questions) Pools  Test Banks (see Quizzes tool, gear icon)

10 Student View Use student view to preview course content
Settings > Student View

13 Communication - Inbox Inbox in Canvas
Send to students (all, section, group, individuals) Copy of message is sent to SacLink Assignment comments/feedback can be viewed in Inbox by students

14 Communication - Discussions
Migrated discussions can be found in Discussions tool Modules - if link was created in a content area or folder Assignments – graded discussions only Migrated discussions placed in a “Published” status Review settings and edit discussions  Enable "Users must post before seeing replies"  Edit descriptions – re-link files in description as needed. Re-attach Rubrics for grading.

15 Communication - Groups
Group shells migrate but editing is needed Edit or Create Groups in People tool

16 Communication - Calendar
Calendar entries for assignment, discussion and quiz due dates are migrated. Access from Global Navigation menu. Edit dates from source (e.g. assignment), from Event edit option, or simply drag-n-drop from one date to another.

17 Final Steps Publish your Course from Homepage
Student Enrollments will be automatic Added and Deleted Use Student View to preview course content Edit Term Settings to open course earlier to students
