When did different American Indian groups live in Utah?

What do we know about Paleo-Indians?
Culture Moved from place to place. Had no permanent shelter. Used rocks, animal bones and sticks as tools for hunting and preparing foods. Food Hunted large animals Gathered seeds, roots, nuts and other natural plants.

What do we know about Archaic Indians?
Culture Moved around following the sources of food. Built small shelters called wicki-ups. Used plant fibers to make sandals, mats and rope. Used atlatls for hunting. Food Hunted smaller animals such as antelopes and birds. Fished in lakes and rivers. Gathered seeds, roots and nuts.

What do we know about the Anasazi?
Culture (Write two) Built dams and reservoirs to catch water. Grew some of their own food. Used the bow and arrow. Built pit houses and apartment buildings into the sides of cliffs and on top of mesas. Made adobe bricks. Created pottery Made baskets to gather and store food.

What do we know about the Anasazi?
Food (Write two) Started farming corn, squash and beans. Gathered seeds, berries, pine nuts and wild bulbs. Hunted buffalo, rabbits, deer and antelope. Raised turkeys. Move around (write all) The Anasazi got around on foot, because there were no horses. Where they lived (write all) The Anasazi lived in the Colorado Plateau region

What do we know about the Fremont?
Culture (Write two) Dug irrigation ditches to take water to crops. Built villages near streams. Most Fremont lived in pit houses. Created and wore jewelry. Made baskets and pottery. Food (Write two) Farmers grew corn, squash and beans. Some gathered seeds, berries, pine nuts and wild bulbs. Some hunted buffalo, deer and antelope.

What do we know about the Shoshone?
Culture (Write two) Had horses. Made clothing from animal skins, grasses and bark. Made tepees of tall poles covered with buffalo skin. Food (Write two) Hunted large and small animals. Fished in streams and rivers. Gathered seeds, roots and nuts.

What do we know about the Goshute?
Culture (Write two) They developed ways to irrigate crops. They found many uses for desert plants. Men wore breech-cloths, women wore aprons or long grass skirts. They lived in villages and built wicki-ups from branches and dirt. Food (Write two) They hunted large and small animals. They fished in streams and rivers. They ate crickets. They dug for roots.

Move around (Write all) They moved around on foot and were dominated by horse-riding tribes like the Shoshone & Ute. Where they lived (Write all) They lived in the dry region of the west desert of Utah and Nevada.

What do we know about the Navajo?
Culture (Write two) They used irrigation and farmed. Raised Sheep and Goats. Used the wool from the sheep to make clothing and blankets. Built hogans from logs and packed dirt. Food (Write two) Hunted large and small animals. Fished in streams and rivers. Gathered seeds, roots and nuts.

What do we know about the Navajo?
Move around (write all) They did have some horses, but a lot of their tribe had to get around on foot. Where they lived (write all) They lived in a dry region that is part of the Colorado Plateau and near the four corners area. The four corners is where the states of Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico meet.
