Psalm 127: Our God Of All Blesssings
Wisdom From God Psalm 127: Our God Of All Blesssings
2
Psalm 127 Question: Are You Richly Blessed? What are your greatest blessings? Psalm 127 is eighth in the Songs of Ascents. It is the middle of the 15 psalms. Psalm 127 is ascribed to Solomon. The song explores the source of every good blessing – Our Almighty God!

Stanza 1: Exercises in Vanity
“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late, to eat the bread of painful labors; for He gives to His beloved even in his sleep”
4
Verse 1 “They labor in vain that build….”
“Unless the Lord build the house….” This is not speaking only about construction projects – but ANYTHING we attempt to build. How about relationships? Careers? Ministries?

Illustrations From Scripture
When God refused to allow building: Genesis 11:3-4 – “They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
6
God didn’t approve their building project
“Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.”

When David Wanted To Build…
1 Kings 5:3-5 – ““You know that David my father was unable to build a house for the name of the Lord his God because of the wars which surrounded him, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet. But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor misfortune. Behold, I intend to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spoke to David my father, saying, ‘Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he will build the house for My name.’”

Concerning The Watchman
Verse 1b – “Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain.” All the guarding we do is for nothing if the Lord God is not keeping us safe. Door locks, security cameras, razor wire fences, nothing can keep you safe unless God keeps you safe.
9
Psalm 121:8 “The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever.” If the Lord is our God we have His protection and safety. He keeps us secure for eternity.
10
1 Samuel 2:9 “He keeps the feet of His godly ones, but the wicked ones are silenced in darkness; for not by might shall a man prevail.” If not by might, then by what?
11
Vanity Of Hard Work For Its Own Sake
Verse 2 – “It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late, to eat the bread of painful labors….” It is not wrong to work hard. It is not vanity to do so. It IS wrong to work without God’s will in mind.
12
What Makes Hard Work Vanity?
There is the person who thinks their success is due entirely to their own prowess, hard work, brilliance, and skill. They are wrong. Their “bread” is earned through hard labor and great personal pain. All for the sake of earning a few bucks to spend on their own pleasures. Yet, the wise person realizes, “For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.”
13
Even In His Sleep? Not God’s sleep – but man’s.
Meaning is that even when we’re sleeping, God is causing us to be blessed. He is giving to us even when we’re asleep in our beds. Have you ever noticed such gifts from God? Mark 4:26-28 – Parable of the seed growing by itself
14
We’re Not To Be Lazy, Though
Scripture praises diligent work Proverbs 31:27 – “She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.” The bread of idleness is not the same as the bread of sorrow.
15
God Gives Even While We Sleep
James 1:5 – “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” God loves to give to us generously.
16
Little Blessings In The Home
Solomon now shows there’s more than one way to build a house. There is a physical property type of house. Then there is a household type of a house – the people rather than the edifice. Such a household is also a blessing from God.
17
Many Facets Of God’s Existence
In this psalm, God is known as: A watchman A guard A protector. Also He is a Father. As He gives rich blessings, He also gives children.
18
How Do We View Our Children?
Some parents refer to their children as: Brats Little monsters Other derogatory names that show they consider their children to be burdens. Children are BLESSINGS!
19
God Provides For His Own Children
Psalm 37:25 – “I have been young and now I am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his descendants begging bread.” Are you richly blessed?
