With one other person, please choose two significant passages from the chapters you are assigned. These passages should be at least a half of a page. Your job is to analyze the passage with your partner.
Below are guiding questions for you to explore when analyzing the passage.
What was Salinger’s purpose for including this passage?
Does this passage emphasize a message that Salinger is sending to his readers about society?
Does this passage present any symbols or motifs? If so, discuss this symbolism as it pertains to the text.
Analyze the text in the passage, what about the vocabulary, dialogue, syntax, and characterization is interesting and/or meaningful?
After analyzing this passage, Is there a message present beyond the literal text?
Is there a subject matter or theme present in this passage? Be specific!
Does this passage support or contradict the literary criticism we’ve read on Salinger?
