1 Unit C: Heat and Temperature
Experiments + Demonstrations

2 Woosh bottle -Exothermic
Add 5mL methanol into culligan water bottle Safely ignite + drop in flame (use tongs) Science: Exothermic reaction: releasing heat (thermal energy) getting hotter Endothermic reaction: absorbing heat (getting colder) ex. Ice packs

3

4 Fantastic Flames Different materials burn different colors
Ex. Green flame is produced when burning copper (copper chloride) Metal can burn: Magnesium (produces magnesium oxide) steel wool + battery

5 Boiling Point-Phase Changes
Ice-water-steam Fusion/melting point at 0oC Evaporation/boiling point at 100oC…or is it? Lower atmospheric pressure in Calgary means that the particles are already farther apart here than they would be at sea level, so it takes less energy to break the bonds that hold the particles together, and so water boils at a lower temperature *Not pure water

6 Ice expands and floats Unlike most materials, which become more dense as they solidify, as water freezes, particles actually get further apart. This means that ice becomes less dense than water, and items that are less dense float. Demo Water in a pop bottle expands in the freezer Ice floats on water

7 Ball + Ring Try to fit the ball through the ring. Does it fit?
Heat the ball with a candle. Does it fit? Why or why not?

8 Does “metal” burn? Battery + steel wool Magnesium + flame
Glycerin + KMnO4

9 Diffusion Drop of food coloring in hot vs. water

10 Convection of a gas chamber
Paper Chamber Match/lighter Water bucket (safety) candle

11 Heat Capacity Wax Dish Metal spheres Stand Instruction sheet
