1 Touch base with your group of 4. What did you come up with?
Day 2 Touch base with your group of 4. What did you come up with? Have students take out their worksheet and compare their answers.

2 Theme Exploration / Thesis Creation
With a partner, draft a thesis that effectively answers the following prompt: How does Hurston (in this excerpt of Their Eyes were Watching God) and Ferlinghetti (in his poem “Short Story on a Painting of Gustav Klimt ”) both use diction and figurative language to establish a unified theme? Tips: Remember the six traits of theme. Feel free to use the thesis skeleton. Give the duos time to work, then pass out a notecard to each duo. Once you have a notecard from each partnership, work through some of the thesis statements. Have them flesh out what is good and what is flawed with each thesis.

3 Thesis Statements--3 Using diction and figurative language to clarify the shift from gentle affection to lust, authors Hurston and Ferlinghetti prove that human desire is a natural instinct. Using diction and shift to express the struggles of love, authors Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Zora Neale Hurston emotionally illustrates to the audience the theme that true love is a simple idea but a complex act. Using diction and figurative language to create a serious tone, the authors clearly portray the central idea of that the journey from childhood to adult may result in loss of innocence.

4 Thesis Statements--7 Using diction and metaphor authors Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Zora Neale Hurston to convey the central idea that even when one is sure about the outcome of something the chances of something else have to be considered. Using diction and figurative language to display the innocence of young love, authors Ferlinghetti and Hurston establish a unified theme that often times seeking love out of innocence does not always lead to a stable connection. In their respective excerpts, Hurston and Ferlinghetti uses both diction and figurative language to display the lack of a choice of love and the universal theme that time is required to create a loving bond.

5 Thesis statements--7 Hurston and Ferlinghetti, both in their respective works, employ dreamy diction and figurative language of the world around them to create two similar surreal scenes to undoubtedly intend the theme that surreal experiences can create an illusion of love. Using romantic diction and flowery figurative language, Zora Neale Hurston establishes that with new beginnings, new knowledge can bloom.

6 Thesis Statements--7 In an excerpt of “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and the poem “Short Story on a painting of Gustav Klimt,” the respective writers Zora Neale Hurston and Lawrence Ferlinghetti use diction and figurative language to clearly illustrate how passion is one of the most beautiful and dangerous acts known to man. Zora Neale Hurston and Lawrence Ferlinghetti use diction and figurative language to evoke a sense of temporary joy to emphasize the theme that happiness does not last long. Using cogent diction and vibrant figurative language to establish the idea of loss of innocence, authors Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Zora Hurston render the theme that as one ages, their perception of the world becomes significantly less optimistic.

7 Thesis Statements--8 Using diction and figurative language to illustrate loss of innocence, authors Hurston and Ferlinghetti clearly explain the central idea that love isn’t always shared by two people. Using diction with emotional connotations and personifying figurative language, both authors convey the idea of complications of love to illustrate the theme that love is a two-way street and a relationship depends equally upon each person. By using connotative diction and figurative language, Hurston in Their Eyes Were Watching God and Ferlinghetti in “Short Story on a Painting by Gustav Klimt” create a loss of innocence to ultimately demonstrate that in the process of maturing, one can make one’s own decisions.

8 Thesis Statements--8 Using poetic diction and natural imagery, authors Hurston and Ferlinghetti depict a lustful tone in order to illustrate the theme of that there is more to a relationship between men and women than sexual acts. Using diction and figurative language, the unified theme by Hurston and Ferlinghetti conveys the theme that when love experiences the loss of innocence, love is not always reciprocated. Using natural imagery, flowery metaphors, and romantic diction, Zora Neale Hurston and Lawrence Ferlinghetti illustrates young love and growing maturity to convey the theme that love isn’t always a shared feeling.

9 Theme Turns Into an Essay
Using the class feedback and discussion, perfect your thesis. Then, write a multi-paragraph essay that fully supports the thesis. The essay expectations are as follows: It needs to be in your RJ It must be hand-written It must be in blue/black INK It should contain quotes from both the poem and the segment of the novel Remember: 1 quote is luck, 2 quotes is coincidence, 3 or more is a pattern/proof It should resemble a timed essay (think of it as a non-timed timed essay) You have the rest of the hour to work on this. The completed essay will be your ticket in the door on Wednesday. Give them the rest of the hour to work on this and then anything that is remaining becomes homework.
