The Monroe Doctrine Objective: Learn how and why the Monroe Doctrine shaped US foreign policy.

Foreign Policy Foreign Policy: A government’s strategy in dealing with other nations Up until this point the United States had pursued a policy of isolation Isolation: a policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interests of other groups, especially the political affairs of other countries

The Monroe Doctrine The purpose of the Monroe Doctrine was to keep Europe out of South America Proclaimed in 1823, it wasn’t called the Monroe Doctrine until 1850 This doctrine was a defining moment in United States foreign policy

But why? This doctrine allowed young South American countries to grow without European interference It also meant that the United States had control over trade in this area This allowed the US to keep growing stronger and cut off Europe

How did it work? Since the United States was still a growing country, they alone could not enforce the doctrine However Great Britain sided with the US and used their Navy to help Together these two countries were able to hold back the rest of Europe from the Western Hemisphere
