2 Characteristics Part of the 18th chromosome is duplicated
Also known as Trisomy 18 (T18) or Trisomy E. Can cause narrow pelvis, defects in the brain, heart, stomach, and kidneys

3 This is an autosomal recessive chromosomal disorder

4 Detected by… Karyotyping Screening Ultrasoundography
A women who is pregnant with a large uterus during the pregnancy because of the extra amniotic fluid Child born with unusually small placenta could lead into the disease

5 Statistics About 1/5,000 frequency of live births
Affects girls more than boys but is often unknown why Most children do not survive illness and die before first grade. Those who survive have mental retardation and cannot do common tasks alone (ie: walking/going to the bathroom)

About 1/6,000 births

7 Morality Rate Morality rate is very low
Many children don’t make it out of the uterus alive

Heart disease

9 Interesting Facts Children tend to have small heads and have growth problems Can consist of 130 discrete defects
