The President & Foreign Policy
Foreign policy is the nation’s plan for dealing with other nations The goals of American foreign policy: Keeping the country safe (national security) International trade World peace Promoting democracy and human rights

Foreign-policy Bureaucracy
The groups that deal with foreign policy matters are: The State Department Department of Defense CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) NSC (National Security Council)

Treaties Treaties are formal agreements between 2 or more countries
Senate must approve by a 2/3 vote Ex. NATO- an agreement between countries for mutual defense

Foreign Relations The U.S. gives aid to other countries by providing money, food, or military assistance The president makes agreements with other countries that involve trade Trade sanctions and embargos: ways of punishing countries by not trading with them NAFTA- An international trade group
