1 Anatomy Do Now: What is the function of the scapula?
What is the function of the pelvic girdle? Identify the name of the bone proximal to the ulna and radius.

2 Objective Knowledge: Name and location of the major bones of the appendicular skeleton. Skills: Ability to identify a given bone of the skeleton given its location Ability to locate a given bone of the skeleton given its name

3 Big Idea: Knowing the names of the major bones of the body is one of the main objectives of the skeletal unit. The ability to locate and name the major bones of the bodies is a major life skill in science and will especially assist students going into medical fields.

4 Bones of the appendicular skeleton:
Clavicle Femur Scapula Tibia Pelvis Fibula Humerus Patella Radius Tarsals Ulna Metatarsals Carpals Pelvic Girdle Metacarpals Phalanges (X2)

5 Upper Limb Clavicle- common name… Scapula- common name…
Humerus- location on arm… Radius- which side… Ulna- which side… Carpals- common name… Metacarpals- classification… Phalanges- common name

6 Lower Limb Femur- common name Tibia- size comparison
Fibula- size comparison Patella- classification Tarsals- common name Metatarsals- classification Pelvic Girdle- function Phalanges- common name

7 206 Bones, All with a Function
You MUST know how to identify the major bones we have gone over. In addition, you MUST know why they are shaped the way they are- it is all for a function. Our activity today will assist in the mastery of these skills. Clear your desk, eyes forward.

8 Skeletal Sketch Today you will be placing all of the bones we have learned into the human body. Note how well this five year old could complete a comparable assignment.

9 Directions You will be working in groups of six (two tables per assignment). Roles: Three students will be tracing and drawing in the bones that we have learned. One of these students will have to be traced. Three students will be working on the functions of the bones/bone groups (on separate paper) Example: The pectoral girdle assists arm movement/ creates joint.

10 Yours should look better than this!
End Product Yours should look better than this! Skull: protects brain I made this in Paint… and clearly my skills are lacking. Pec. Girdle: Allows arm movement Ribs: Protect heart and lungs Pelvic Girdle: Holds in internal organs, creates joint for lower limb
