Chp. 10 Married and Single Life

2 What is family? Difficult to define because most people have a different idea of what family is to them. Most often used to describe a person’s connection with their ancestry. Sometimes based on feelings such as with a foster child. When a group lives together as a family would, such as roommates.

3 Types of Families Nuclear Family – consists of members of two generations: parents and children.

4 Types of Families Extended Family – includes relatives other than parents and children. Ex. Grandparents or cousins.

5 Types of Families Single-Parent Family – headed by one parent who has never married or is left alone through death or divorce.

6 Types of Families Stepfamily – at least one spouse has children from a previous relationship. Blended family – when BOTH spouses have children from a previous relationship.

7 The Family Life Cycle Beginning – marriage Expanding – having children
Developing – children grow up and go through school Launching – children move out and go to college/career of their own Middle Years – “empty nest” Later Years – retirement and spending time with grandchildren
