Auto & Air Pollution
24
A Car commuting 18 miles roundtrip, 5 days/week & 48 weeks/year emmits:
4,500 lbs. of carbon dioxide (CO2) 160 pounds of carbon monoxide (CO) 16 lbs. of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) 16 lbs. of nitrogen oxide (NOx) Smaller amounts of benzene, formaldehyde, particulate matter and other toxic materials
25
Auto Catalytic Converters
Definition: A substance that causes or speeds a chemical reaction without itself being affected; Catalysts inside catalytic converters are precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium coated on the surface of ceramic honeycomb structures.
26
Catalytic Converter
27
Chemical Reactions HC + O2 = H2O + CO2 CO + O2 = CO2 NOX = N2 + O2
SOX = S + O2 C(PM) + O2 = CO2
28
Ozone Definition: A form of oxygen, O3, produced when an electric spark or ultraviolet light passes through air or oxygen, that in the upper atmosphere absorbs ultraviolet rays, thereby preventing them from reaching the earth's surface, but that near the earth's surface is a harmful irritant and pollutant: used commercially for bleaching, oxidizing, etc.
29
Ozone Creation/ Depletion
Solar Formation O2 + Sunlight = 2O O + O2 = O3 Solar Depletion O3 + Sunlight = O2 + O O + O3 = 2O2
