BODY SYSTEMS CRASH COURSE: DAY 1
2
FOLDABLE INSTRUCTIONS
Take the first two Cut Out Sheets (Cut Out Sheet 1 and Cut Out Sheet 2) and cut out the four person boxes, leaving the labels attached to your cut outs. Cut around the label boxes on Muscular and Circulatory on Page 2 but leave the labels intact. These will be taped down on the notes sheet that is separate.
3
FOLDABLE INSTRUCTIONS
Start with the Circulatory flap. Fold back the little box behind the world Circulatory. Now line the box up over the person on the center of the page 4 with the flap on the left side of the person. Your flap should cover the center person. Take a piece of tape and tape the inside of the little folded over flap onto the paper over the center person. Your tape should cover the little flap so it will stay in place. Firmly crease over the fold so the this paper sits nicely. You can double tape on the outside over the word circulatory to keep it more secure.
4
FOLDABLE INSTRUCTIONS
Next you will be doing the same with the Muscular system flap. Fold over just the little box under the word muscular. Line it up on top of the flap you just taped down but with the label on the right. Take tape and tape the little box flap down TO THE BIG SHEET (you may need to temporarily open the other flap to do so). Tape the inside of the box and cover in tape to make sure it stays down. This flap should sit ON TOP of the Cirulatory flap.
5
FOLDABLE INSTRUCTIONS
Next take the Skeletal Flap. It is going to go on top of both of the other flaps and be taped at the bottom of the boxes. Carefully fold back the little box and then tape down ON THE BIG SHEET at the bottom of the person box. Now fold back in place so that it is ON TOP of the muscular and circulatory flaps.
6
FOLDABLE INSTRUCTIONS
Finally take the Integumentary System flap and it will be taped on the top of the box. Carefully fold over the little flap and tape it down ON THE BIG SHEET on top of the person box. Fold it over now so that it sits on top of all three other flaps. Double check that 4. Circulatory sits down first, then 3. Muscular, then 2. Skeletal and finally 1. Integumentary
7
THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM
On the person flap, DRAW the following structures onto the person… DRAW ON AND LABEL ON YOUR PERSON: Hair, Skin and Nails BRAINPOP: SKIN
8
THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM
MAIN ORGANS OF THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM: SKIN HAIR NAILS SWEAT & OIL GLANDS
9
THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM
THE FUNCTION OF THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM: Barrier against infection (1st line of defense) Helps regulate body temperature Removes excretory waste (urea, water) Protects against sun’s UV rays Produces Vitamin D
10
THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM
SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM: Your skin is your largest organ! You will shed 40lbs of skin in your lifetime!
11
INTEGUMENTARY Interactions with Other Systems
w/excretory – removes cellular waste 2. w/nervous – controls body temperature (sweating, goose bumps) 3. w/immune – prevents pathogens from entering
12
THE SKELETAL SYSTEM BRAINPOP: SKELETON SKULL Label the bones that are labelled in the diagram to the right. HUMERUS RIB PELVIS FEMUR
13
THE SKELETAL SYSTEM BONES CARTIALAGE (Covers bones at joints)
MAIN ORGANS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM: BONES CARTIALAGE (Covers bones at joints) LIGAMENTS (Connect bones to other bones) TENDONS (Connect Muscles to Bones)
14
THE FUNCTION OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM:
You need to write this information on the BACK of your skeletal system FLAP. THE FUNCTION OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM: Protects organs (Skull and Rib Cage) Provides shape, support Stores minerals Produces blood cells (in the Bone Marrow) Allows movement (Arms and Legs)
15
SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE SKELETAL SYSTEM:
You do not need to write this down. SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE SKELETAL SYSTEM: Your longest bone is your femur and it is ¼ of your height. Your smallest bone is inside your ear and the size of a grain of rice.
16
SKELETAL Interactions with Other Systems
w/muscular – allow movement 2. w/circulatory – produces blood cells 3. w/immune – produce white blood cells 4. w/circulatory and respiratory – protects it’s organs
17
Label the muscles that are labelled in the diagram to the right
THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM BRAINPOP: MUSCLES DELTOIDS BICEPS TRICEPS ABDOMINALS Label the muscles that are labelled in the diagram to the right
18
THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM Skeletal Muscle covering your bones
You need to write this information on the BACK of your muscular system FLAP. MAIN ORGANS OF THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM: Skeletal Muscle covering your bones Smooth Muscle in your digestive system Cardiac Muscle makes up your heart
19
Allows for movement by contracting
THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM You need to write this information on the BACK of your muscular system FLAP. THE FUNCTION OF THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM: Allows for movement by contracting
20
THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM It takes 20 muscles to smile but over 40 to frown!
You do not need to write this down. It is attached to your notes already! ONE INTERESTING FACT ABOUT THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM: It takes 20 muscles to smile but over 40 to frown!
21
MUSCULAR Interactions with Other Systems
1. w/skeletal – allow movement 2. w/digestive – allow organs to contract to push food through 3. w/respiratory – diaphragm controls breathing 4. w/circulatory – controls pumping of blood (heart) 5. w/nervous – controls all muscle contractions
22
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
LABEL the veins, arteries and Heart on the diagram of the person. BRAINPOP: CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
23
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
More pictures to admire but not draw… VEINS and ARTERIES THE HEART
24
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
You need to write this information on the BACK of your circulatory system FLAP. MAIN ORGANS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM: The Heart Blood Arteries carry blood from the heart Veins carry blood back to the heart Capillaries are where veins and arteries meet
25
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
You need to write this information on the BACK of your circulatory system FLAP. THE FUNCTION OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM: Transports materials to and from cells
26
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
You do not need to write this down. It is attached to your notes already! SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM: It takes about 1 minute for one red blood cell to circulate through your entire body Red blood cells live for about 4 months and make 250,000 trips through your body in that time.
27
CIRCULATORY Interactions with Other Systems
w/respiratory – deliver O2 from lungs to cells and drop off CO2 from cells to lungs 2. w/digestive – absorb and deliver digested nutrients to cells 3. w/excretory – kidneys filter cellular waste out of blood for removal 4. w/lymphatic – both transport things to and from cells 5. w/immune – transports WBCs throughout body to fight disease 6. w/nervous – brain controls heartbeat 7. w/endocrine – transports hormones
28
THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
