5 Roots of Modern Science
To find answers, people looked to the Greeks, Romans, and the Bible. Geocentric Theory Belief that the earth was the center of the universe. The Scientific Revolution began b/c of discoveries of new lands and animals. This opened the possibility that there were new truths to be found.

6 A Revolutionary Theory
Copernicus developed the heliocentric theory but was afraid of persecution. Kepler showed that Copernicus’s ideas were mathematically true. Galileo supported Copernicus and, by using a telescope, noted that the Earth’s moon had a rough and uneven surface. Went against the Church and Aristotle. Galileo was summoned to Rome to read a statement that Copernicus’s ideas were false.

7 The Scientific Method Francis Bacon urged scientists to experiment and then draw conclusions. Rene Descartes believed that everything should be doubted until proved by reason. “I think, therefore I am.”

8 Isaac Newton Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell. He began to wonder why apples always fall down, never sideways or up. Newton’s Law of Gravitation Every object in the universe attracts every other object. The degree of attraction depends on the mass of the objects and the distance between them.
