2 Background (what is it?)
Diabetes is a silent killer Impact is significant (Cost and Quality of Life) Financial cost of type-2 diabetes is around $11billion Around 300 Australians develop diabetes per day Around 2 million Australians have diabetes: 50% type-2 ~ 50% type-2 are undiagnosed ? (Diabetes Australia 2008) There is no cure for type-1 and type-2 diabetes The disease must be managed with lifestyle regular blood glucose testing Mediation when required through clinical intervention Clinical management of patient with chronic diseases management processes and protocols alternative approaches (e.g., elevation of antioxidants …….,) Clinical validation and scientific experiments…….., 31/12/2018 Jelinek et al ICHM2012

3 Materials & Methods (How did we approach the problem?)
A controlled crossover study A randomised control trail – (30 volunteers: 18 males + 12 females) Participants (type -2 , 14 participants 10 males + 4 females) The control group of 16 participants Randomisation (Group A and B of each comprise 15 participants) The treatment: Ginger root powder capsule (1000mg) daily for 4 weeks Before the treatments: Reference blood samples was taken Oxidative biomarkers and Lipid profile were measured (GSM, MDA, LDL, HDL) Group A: gets the treatments while Group B: Vitamin B1 100mg tablet daily (placebo) After 4 weeks second blood sample was taken oxidative biomarkers and lipid profile were measured and compared with initial readings groups cross over  then repeated with Group A after 4 weeks the third blood sample was taken Statistical Analysis (Hypothesis Testing) Two-sample t-test (P<0.05; CI=95%) and more …..? May be Factorial Experiments? Repeat the experiments Clinical validation and scientific experiments…….., 31/12/2018 Jelinek et al ICHM2012

4 What we achieved so far? Non-diabetic group had lower BMI
waist circumference higher total cholesterol, LDL, HDL Type-2 diabetic group (after Ginger treatment) GSH value decreased significantly (P<0.034) No difference for MDA & Methaemoglobin With Vitamin B1 treatment, there is no differences were found for GSH, MDA and Methaemoglobin in either group 31/12/2018 Jelinek et al ICHM2012

5 How close are we? 31/12/2018 Jelinek et al ICHM2012

6 How close are we? 31/12/2018 Jelinek et al ICHM2012

7 How close are we? 31/12/2018 Jelinek et al ICHM2012

8 What we can say about it? Direct measurements In-direct measurements
Self-managing type-2 candidates more accurate and faster diagnosis reduction of early clinical time intervals Reduction in BMI cholesterol- LDL, HDL In-direct measurements Reduction in GSH in the type-2 group Ginger may have an antioxidant effect Likelihood of reducing the diabetic….?? 31/12/2018 Jelinek et al ICHM2012
