3 GOALS To explain the differences between mass and weight.
To calculate the weight of a given object when affected by differing gravitational forces. Eureka Mass Eureka Weight vs. Mass

4 Q: What are the differences between Mass and Weight?
Measured in grams Tells how much matter is in an object (not affected by gravity!) Also measures the inertia of an object More mass = more inertia

5 Q: What are the differences between Mass and Weight?
Measured in NEWTONS Tells us how much gravity affects the object

6 Q: What are the differences between Mass and Weight?
Mass and Weight are directly proportional to each other (assuming we are on the same planet in the same location) This means if we double the mass of an object, we double the weight

7 Equation Triangle We can convert between mass and weight using the following triangle. (Really, this is just Newton’s 2nd law!) W = weight in N (aka Force) m = mass in kg **Make sure you have the proper units BEFORE you calculate! g = acceleration due to gravity, 9.8 m/s2 on earth; changes if you go to a different planet! W m g ***1 kg = 2.2 lbs***

8 Homework Parts 2 – 5 of pkt If given a weight in lbs, you must first convert to kg using DA Then plug mass into triangle formula to find weight in NEWTONS
