REGIONAL ISSUES & CONTROVERSIES
2
TARIFFS North Favored tariffs – because if foreign goods were more expensive, consumers were more likely to buy American goods, and this would mean more factories and jobs
3
TARIFFS South Against tariffs – raised the price of imports for southerners
4
TARIFFS West Favored tariffs – tariffs would help encourage growth of American industry and cities in north, and they hoped to sell the products of their farms to northern workers
5
INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS
North Liked tariffs paying for Internal Improvements; needed roads to move raw materials to the factories and carry finished goods to market
6
INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS
South Did not feel the need for large-scale road and canal construction because they relied largely on rivers for transportation
7
INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS
West Felt internal improvements were necessary to ship their farm products to the east and get factory-produced goods to the west
8
WESTERN LANDS North Opposed government’s selling of too much land too cheaply in the west; thought cheap western land would tempt city dwellers in the east to move west and decrease factory labor force
9
WESTERN LANDS South “Suspicious” of cheap western land; afraid that competition from western farmers would threaten their cotton sales
10
WESTERN LANDS West Favored cheap available land; wanted more settlers quickly so the territories could become states faster and have representation in congress
