1
a tissue made of cells that form a barrier between a living thing
Epithelial Tissue a tissue made of cells that form a barrier between a living thing and the tissue’s outside environment Lines or covers... examples of include skin intestines lungs
2
Nervous Tissue the tissue of the nervous system which is made of neurons and their supporting cells In other words... Brain and nerve cells
3
Connective Tissue A tissue that connects and supports other tissues holds organs in place ligaments and tendons
4
Muscle Tissue A tissue that can contract (squeeze) and relax to produce movement smooth skeletal cardiac
5
Identify the tissue
6
Body cavity any cavity that holds and protects organs like throat and lungs, abdominal and pelvic
7
Axial Skeleton bones of the skull and vertebrae Appendicular Skeleton arm and leg bones
8
bone marrow soft tissue inside bones where the red and white blood cells are made
9
Periosteum tough, fibrous tissue that covers bones and has blood vessels that supply nutrients to bones and nerves
10
Haversian Canal found in compact bone tissue and as blood vessels This canal is how blood gets from the marrow to the circulatory system where blood flows throughout the body
11
Osteocyte a bone cell
12
Osteoporosis a condition where bones break easily because they are weak and skinny
13
Joint Where two or more bones meet 5 kinds of Joints Ball and socket
Gliding Pivot Hinge Fixed Where two or more bones meet
14
ball and socket gliding hinge pivot fixed
15
Ligament This tissue holds the ends of the bones together. Ex:
16
Tendon this tough connective tissue attaches muscles to bones or other body parts Ex
17
Flexor this muscle bends body parts
18
Extensor A muscle that extends or straightens
20
Epidermis The outer layer of a plant or animal
21
Keratin flexible but hard proteins that make up hair, feathers, nails and horns
22
Melanin the pigment that gives skin its
color. This pigment also protects the epidermis (skin) from harmful ultraviolet radiation
23
Dermis 2nd layer of skin. It is under the epidermis
24
Hair follicle a hole in the skin that surrounds a hair and the root of a hair
25
Subcutaneous Tissue cells that are located under the skin
26
Sebum an oily substance made by the sweat glands
27
Key chapter concepts Cells are grouped into 4 kinds of tissue:
·epithelial ·nervous ·connective ·muscle (3 kinds- smooth, skeletal, cardiac) Body organs contain more than 1 type of tissue ex: lungs- smooth muscle and epithelial
28
The Skeletal System: The skeleton ·supports the body
·provides protection ·allows movement ·stores nutrients ·makes blood There are 206 bones. The skeleton is divided into 2 parts ·axial (skull, vertebra (spine), ribs, and sternum ·appendicular (everything else) Bones start as cartilage (like your ear) and then harden as you get older with calcium and minerals There are 5 kinds of joints: ·ball and socket (hip, shoulder) ·gliding (hand) ·pivot (elbow) ·hinged (knee and elbow) ·fixed (jaw)
29
Bone marrow: Muscular System:
·red and white blood cells are made in the marrow of long bones ·Haversian Canals and the Periosteum transport blood ·from the bone marrow to the circulatory system Muscular System: ·Tendons attach muscles to bone ·Ligaments attach bone to bone
30
Skin, Hair and Nails The skin has 2 layers ·epidermis ·dermis
·Subcutaneous tissue holds skin to organs ·Hair and nails are made from the epidermis layer ·Most skin problems are caused from damage to the top layer of skin (epidermis)
