Danube River is the second longest river in Europe after Volga
Danube River is the second longest river in Europe after Volga. It springs from the Black Forest mountains of western Germany and flows for 2,860 km to its mouth on the Black Sea. Along its course it passes through 10 countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine.

The river’s majesty has long been celebrated in music. The famous waltz ”An der schönen, blauen Donau” (1867; ”The Blue Danube”), by Johann Strauss the Younger, became the symbol of Imperial Vienna.

Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and it is the best preserved on the continent. Danube Delta is the newest land in the country, with beaches expanding into the sea. Overall, the delta is a triangular swampy area of marshes, floating reed islands and sandbanks. It is a UNESCO Biosphere Reservation as well as a protected wetland and natural habitat for rare species of plants and animals.
