VSEPR Group 1: BeF2, HgCl2, CO2 Group 2: AlCl3, SO2, O3 Group 3: CH4, OF2, PCl3 Group 4: PCl5, SBr2, XeF2 Group 5: SF6, ClF5, XeF4 In groups, observe the groups attached to the center atom, groups of lone pairs, and groups of atoms. Create a chart and be prepared to come up to the board and enter in your findings

VSEPR The properties of molecules depend on the bonding atoms as well as the 3-D arrangement of atoms in space VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) VSEPR theory states that repulsion between the sets of valence-level electrons surrounding an atom causes these sets to be oriented as far apart as possible

VSEPR This assumption that electrons in molecules repel each other accounts for the molecular shapes of each atom You need to learn these so that you can draw out the arrangement of atoms and fully understand their orientation Consider a diatomic molecule such as BF2 that we discussed. What arrangement could be created so that the atoms are the farthest apart? If the molecules are arranged on opposite sides of the central atom they are the farthest apart Let’s go through this video to get a visual of these shapes

VSEPR Now that we have a good idea of the possible shapes, let’s work through this tutorial for further practice with these three-dimensional shapes and more clearly visualize the shapes Make sure to explore all parts of the website and take notes. These will help you be able to draw and visualize many different molecules
