Early Life Aquinas was born in Roccasecca, Italy, 1225
Youngest of 9 children He was placed in the residence of Monte Cassino by his family in hopes of him becoming an Abbot (superior of a Monk community) He was forced to go back to his family after the monks were expelled for being too obedient to the pope

Studies and Teachings From there he was sent to the University of Naples Studied scientific and philosophy works that was translated from Greek to Arabic Joined the Dominicans and began teaching and preaching His parents did not agree with his views so they “kidnapped” him on the road to Paris for a year

In autumn 1245, Aquinas went to Saint-Jacques University of Paris
Studied the works of Aristotle and publicly lectured them Churches and Christians tried to shut down the idea of naturalism and rationalism Summer of 1248, Aquinas left Paris to go to the convent in Cologne He stayed there until 1252 Returned to Paris to prepare to get a masters degree in theology

After getting a bachelor's degree he received his license to teach in 1256
Began teaching in a Dominican school , taught at the convent of Saint Sabina in Rome

Influence Thomas believed in the Natural Law, an observable law relating to natural phenomena Government must work for the good for the people Must serve the people and help them live rightly Government had a moral responsibility to be obedient to the divine laws

No law could contradict God’s teaching on virtue
Felt strongly in human rights

Last Years 1272- returned to Italy to establish a Dominican house at University of Naples Continued teaching until the end of year January 1274,Thomas Aquinas was personally summoned by Pope Gregory X On his way he became ill and died in Fossa Nuova, March 7, 1274 In 1277, 12 of Aquinas theses were condemned
