Napoleon Bonaparte Sent to Military school at a young age
Became a lieutenant in the French Army at age 16 Was appointed leader of the military by The Directory (France’s new government) Protected France from other countries during the Revolution

Napoleon the Dictator The Directory started to lose the confidence of the French citizens and were afraid another revolution The Directory puts Napoleon in charge of the Military, and wanted him to take control of France The legislative assembly voted to change the government Instead of 5 Directors ---> now 3 Consuls Napoleon seizes complete power from the other 2 Consuls Coup d’etat (Coo-de-ta)

Military strategy unlike any other Was able to take over nearly half of Western Europe Wanted to become more powerful then Great Britain Tried to blockade – cut off ability to trade Russia refused to obey the order – Napoleon decides to attack

Napoleon and his men (or whats left of them) make it back to France Napoleon able to quickly raise up another army Small and inexperienced, Were destroyed at the Battle of Leipzig (Germany) Austrians, Prussians and British start to squeeze in on Napoleon

Napoleon forced to surrender and accept the terms of Alexander I (Russia) One of those terms – Exile Elba

Napoleon escapes! Napoleon able to get off the Island of Elba, and raise another army! Defeated by the British at the battle of Waterloo This time – exiled to St. Helena

What to do now? Napoleon dies a few years later on St. Helena
