There are 5 Registers of ASL
Formal Consultative Casual/Informal/Conversational Intimate Frozen

Formal - 5 bounced on chest
Used to maximize social distance and often used to assert a position of power or prestige. Used to impart knowledge without much social interaction. Speaker must make intentions explicit. KNOW THIS Example: Used by experts, scholars, politicians, etc. in presentations, but NOT conversation Write and example in your own words.

Consultative- 1 bounced on a CL5
Establishes and maintains a neutral and task-oriented distance from people. Very little information is assumed or implied. KNOW THIS Example: Conversation between teachers and students, or bosses and employees Write and example in your own words.

Casual/Informal/Conversational 5 palm down C* alternate from mouth
Used to establish a familiarity and remembrance of shared experiences and attitudes. Information is somewhat linguistically and topically implicit. KNOW THIS Example: Peers in social conversations Write an example in your own words.

Intimate- a/10 together Used to establish maximum intimacy among people who interact regularly. Most information is linguistically and topically assumed and implicit. KNOW THIS Example: Conversation between spouses/partners Write and example in your own words.

Frozen- Claw 5 pull toward self
Involves language forms that are fixed, formulaic, and cannot be altered or changed. Typically prescribed by law, ritual, or custom. KNOW THIS Used in official situations or instances and/or languages of prestige and power. Example: Being sworn in as president. Write and example in your own words.

Activity -VOICE OFF Make a group of 2 or 3 (put your desks together, to make space) Get a Chart Paper from the front of the room Read the topic at the top of the paper Write an idea for each of the registers, (how might you gloss –sign- them differently)

EXAMPLE: What is your favorite zoo animal?
Formal: “Join the lecture on the impact of zoos on the wild lion population Friday at 1:00” Consultative: “Do you have any information on lions for a project I’m doing in Science” Casual: “Lion’s are clearly the best, they have the loudest roar” Intimate: “I loved lions ever since we went to the zoo on our first date” Frozen: “ Please do not feed the animals.” -a sign at the zoo
