1 Physical Properties and Changes

2 Physical Properties You do not have to change the composition (what it is made of) of a substance to observe physical properties

3 Physical Properties Examples:
Color Odor Taste

4 Physical Properties Ex. Cont.:
Density – measure of how tightly packed matter is. (see pg. 295 – density balls)‏ Magnetism – ability to be attracted/connected to a magnet.

5 Physical Properties Ex. Cont.:
Conduct – ability to increase the flow of electricity, sound, light, heat, and cold. Insulate – ability to prevent the flow of electricity, sound, light, heat, and cold.

6 Physical Properties Ex. Cont.:
Buoyancy – the upward push on an object by the liquid (or gas) it is placed in. Absorption – the process of taking in (usually liquids)‏

7 Physical Properties Ex. Cont.:
Boiling point – temp. at which a liquid has enough heat/energy to change to a gas. 100 degrees Celsius

8 Physical Properties Ex. Cont.:
Melting point – temp. when a solid becomes a liquid. Freezing point – temp. when a liquid becomes a solid. 0 degrees Celsius

9 Physical Changes

10 Physical Change A change in matter that only changes the appearance of the substance Substance that has the same ingredients but different forms

11 Examples of Physical Change
Water freezing Tearing paper

12 Examples of Physical Change
Candle Melting
