Product Engineering Scenario Overview
Click process chevrons for details Creating Product Design Information and Materials in External System Maintaining Product Designs and Executing Handover to Production Preparing for Production Scenario Explorer Scenario Description Open Legend The Product Engineering business scenario ensures that designs of your product (such as drawings, descriptions, 3D representations) and the required materials can be managed in SAP Business ByDesign so that you can prepare the production of the product. This includes consistent maintenance of material master data, production bills of material (PBoMs) and other prerequisites for production. This is particularly relevant when your company has a focus on engineering with frequent changes of a product or a high rate of handovers from engineering to production. You can create product designs from scratch or import them into SAP Business ByDesign from your external engineering system. In SAP Business ByDesign you can maintain them in order to match production capabilities. When released, product designs can be handed over to production and a production bill of material is generated automatically. Materials can be assigned to product designs or to the associated production bill of material. Production models are generated from the production bill of materials, providing the basis for production. Product Engineering Process: Creating Product Design Information and Materials in External System
Click process chevrons for details Creating Product Design Information and Materials in External System X Create product design information and materials in external system (optional, external) Maintaining Product Designs and Executing Handover to Production Preparing for Production i Scenario Explorer Process Description Further Information Your products are designed in your engineering department in dedicated systems, be it mechanical, electronical, or mechatronical engineering systems (CAD, CAE, CAM). The designs created in those systems are the basis for supply chain activities, as well as communication with your customers. Therefore, these digital designs need to be available to the rest of your organization and changes to them need to be communicated without delay to ensure that your organization works with up-to-date and consistent information. This is important, for example, when preparing the supply process or when checking if supplies are available at desired cost. To guarantee this, designs of your product (including drawings, descriptions, 3D representations) can be imported into SAP Business ByDesign, for example, from a CAD system. A product design in SAP Business ByDesign is created, reflecting a production bill of material. Depending on your organization, a product design can be very similar to your production bill of material, but it can also mainly reflect the construction view with all aspects relevant to production still to be incorporated. The Production Engineer can change the structure of the product design and assign materials, or change assigned materials. New versions or copies of a product design can be created. A released product design version can be handed over to production with reference to an engineering change order, and a production bill of material is created automatically. This is mandatory for the handover to production. However, it is still possible to assign materials after the handover. The consistency check can also be executed by a scheduled batch-process that checks inconsistent product designs and sets them to consistent if possible. Product Engineering Process Details: Preparing for Production
Click process chevrons for details X Preparing for Production Creating Product Design Information and Materials in External System Maintaining Product Designs and Executing Handover to Production Create, maintain, and assign materials Maintain production bills of material and production bill of material variants Create, maintain, and release production models i i i Scenario Explorer Process Description Further Information The Preparing for Production business process covers the management of production bills of materials (PBoMs) and all other master data that are prerequisites for production and is aimed at facilitating maximum reuse. The production planner maintains the PBoMs that have been handed over by the product engineer. New variants of a production bill of material can be created and input materials can be assigned or changed. Where applicable, material masters themselves can be created and updated. Engineering change orders control all changes to production bills of material. The production engineer creates production models and assigns a PBoM variant and a bill of operations to the production model. The bill of operation provides details about the individual steps in the production. The user can check a new or changed production model to verify if it can be released to supply chain planning and production execution. Once the production model is released, everything is prepared for production. You can increase customer satisfaction by reducing lead time in engineering and reduce quality costs by automating the creation of the bill of materials. SAP Business ByDesign helps efficiently manage CAD / TDM data import and the adaption or creation of bills of material. Released designs can be handed over to production.
