Originally Discovered and claimed for Spain by Ponce De Leon Under British Control after the French and Indian War (1763) Treaty of Paris 1783: Returns to Spanish Empire Planters from Virginia, Georgia and the Carolinas set up Plantations of Cotton and Tobacco Settlers begin to Resist Spanish control in 1810 Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 Officially becomes an American Territory in 1821

In 1837 over half of Florida’s population was made up of slaves The voters wanted Statehood and drafted a Constitution in 1839 Congress was concerned with the number of Slave and Free states Florida could not enter as a slave state until March 3, 1845 Iowa enters the union as a free state the following year to balance the power in Congress
