What is a genre? A division or category of literature
Every work of literature is categorized by genre according to its characteristics

Broad Genres 3 major genres Prose (fiction and nonfiction) Drama

Historical Fiction Has fictional characters with a historical backdrop
Contains many details about the time period in which it is set

Realistic Fiction Deals with events that could happen in real life
Represents the burdens, struggles, joys, and happenings of everyday life

Adventure Main characters go on a journey of some sort
Involves self discovery and/or the resolution of a conflict

Thriller The main characters are usually in or cause danger

Drama A story that is meant to be performed and viewed by an audience
