PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT includes: Eye protection Gloves Masks Gowns Sterile technique is employed to prevent contamination of unwanted microbes
3
BIOHAZARD container Dispose of biological waste properly Known & unknown bacteria, viruses, etc. (culture media, body fluids, etc.) Genetically modified organisms & cells
4
AUTOCLAVE Sterilizer that uses steam under pressure (like a pressure cooker) This sterilizing technique destroys all pathogenic microbes on instruments & media Autoclaves use high heat > 250 F Materials are sterilized for at least 15 minutes
5
BIOHAZARD CONTAINMENT HOOD A cabinet hood for agents that require safety containment (i.e. etiologic agents, specific viruses, cytotoxic agents, hazardous drugs, etc. Hood uses a hepa-filtered air exchange
6
Laminar Flow Hood Enclosed bench designed to prevent contamination of biological samples Uses laminar flow (hepa filter) air toward user Cabinets may have a UV-C germicidal lamp to sterilize the shell & the contents
