Your Own Safety is … #1 Cupertino has specific safety rules for all CERT members. We’ll review them at each class. Your own safety is ….. #1 NEVER put your self in danger to help someone else – otherwise we may have two victims. Go through each slide and let them try to fill in the blank before revealing it.

Only do what you have been ___________ to do!!!
TRAINED Only do what you have been____to do……TRAINED From a liability standpoint, you are covered by the Good Samaritan Law which says that if you are acting within the scope of your training, it is highly unlikely that you will ever be successfully sued. What would happen if one volunteer was ever successfully sued for trying to help someone else? No one would ever help again…

WEAR SAFETY EQUIPMENT! Hard Hat Goggles Mask (N95) Gloves Boots
Leather gloves, not gardening gloves Goggles Hard Hat N95 Mask Boots Show the N95 mask and explain the difference between a “Comfort” mask (sells for about 19 cents) vs the N95 (sells for $2, is OSHA rated to protect against particulate matter – smoke, dust, anthrax). This doesn’t mean that you should put on your mask and walk out into hazardous conditions. It means that if you’re exposed to hazards, you can provide some protection for yourself. You will need to have gloves, goggles and heavy shoes for graduation. We will give you the mask and hard hat.

Citizen Corps The President has encouraged Americans to volunteer to improve and safeguard the nation. Areas of emphasis for volunteer efforts: Neighborhood Watch Block Leaders Medical Reserve Corps Ham Radio CERT They’ve identified needs for additional staff, through Citizen Corps volunteer programs that include: Neighborhood Watch, Block Leaders, Medical Reserve Corps, Amateur Radio and CERT Every member of these organizations has a better idea what to expect and what to do during emergencies. In addition, they become communication access points in their neighborhood so that we can get information out more quickly to everyone. We have a very active and professional Ham Radio group in the City, called CARES (explain acronym). There are 75 members who meet monthly and develop their own plans to provide emergency communications for the city. There is a handout in the back of module one that explains how easy it is to get your own ham radio license. The MRC is a new program that is designed to increase our disaster medical response capability in the City. If you know anyone who lives in Cupertino and is a Doctor, Nurse, Physician’s Assistant, Paramedic, EMT, Mental Health Professional, Chiropractor, Veterinarian, Nursing Student, Massage Therapist, we’d like to register them as volunteers and give them a briefing on when/where we might need their assistance. It’s very important the we pre-identify professionals so that we have time to verify their credentials before the emergency happens. In addition, we offer training to CERT graduates who would like to participate by taking a 52 hour Red Cross Advanced First Aid training course.
