Geographical position
Canada occupies the northern part of the continent of North America (with an exception of Alaska) and a number of islands. It stretchers from the Great Lakes in the south to the Arctic Circle in the north. Its western coast is washed by the Pacific Ocean and its eastern coast is washed by the Atlantic Ocean.

Mountains The Rocky Mountains run along the Pacific coast. There are also mountains which run parallel to Canada`s east coast and in Labrador, a peninsula on the east coast of Canada. We can also find mountains in the island Baffin Land.

Lakes Canada is a country of lakes. The Great Lakes are situated along the boundary of the USA and Canada. They consist of 5 lakes: Huron, Superior, Erie, Ontario, Michigan (on the territory of the USA). There are many other large lakes such as: Great Bear Lake, Great Slave Lake, Lake Winnipeg.

Rivers Canada also has long rivers: the Mackenzie, the Yukon, the St.Lawrence River. The Mackenzie flows from the Rocky Mountains into the Arctic Ocean. The Yukon flows into the Pacific Ocean and the St.Lawrence River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

Climate Canada has several climatic regions. Winter in Canada lasts from four to five months with heavy snowfalls. The north of the country is tundra. The central plains form the prairie.

The political system of Canada
Canada is a federal state within the Commonwealth of Nations. Formally the head of the state is the King or Queen of the U.K. Represented by the Governor-General. The Federal Parliament consists of the Senate and the House of Commons. The members of the House of Commons are elected for a period of five years. The members of the Senate are appointed by the Governor-General.
