11 II. 2. Europeans wanted a new route to Asia because spices and other goods were very expensive. Italian merchants controlled the spice trade. Transporting goods from Asia was very costly, by the time they reached Europe, they were very expensive. 1. Spices were in great demand. They were used to preserve meats and fish. Spices were also used to improve the flavor of food.

12 3. Imperialism – one country takes over and controls another country – natives had their land taken over by Europeans Religion – Missionaries were sent to convert conquered people to Christianity. Diseases – Europeans carried deadly diseases like smallpox, measles, and malaria with them and exposed the natives who had no immunity against the diseases. Thousands died. Slavery – Europeans forced conquered people to work the land where they lived. They were treated harshly and were often killed.
