What is my age??? My age is a prime number
Six years ago my age was a prime number as well and I hope to reach another prime number in four years. This situation (6 years ago, 4 years to go) happens only twice in a lifetime!! Life begins at forty. If that is true, I am as old as Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison when they passed away Imagine an empty number line from 0 – 100. I go to the middle and I make two steps of 10 to the right. I turn around and make 3 little steps of 1 to the left. Now I reached my age….

Discussion: Why did I decide to start this workshop in this way?
What did this start do to you?
5
How to create a challenging and effective math lesson?
6
Phase 1 Warming up Ideas for a warming up?
Criterions for a warming up: Every learner must be able to participate A warming up only takes a few minutes A warming up is fun
7
Phase 2 Outline of the lesson to come Note:
If you come in a learning situation, it´s very important to know what the teacher is going to do. The contents of the lesson should not be a surprise for the learners. Write down the outline on your blackboard or whiteboard. Brief and understandable!
8
Phase 3 Repetition (about 5 minutes)
Don´t think your learners never forget what they learned before! Illusion! For instant: If you paid attention to the times table of 4, it is very essential to pay attention over and over: repeat and MEMORISE! So, every day some (short) and oral repetition!!
9
Phase 4 - 1 Instruction time
Note: from research we know, grade 1 – 3 learners can focus and listen about 15 minutes. If teachers talk too long, it is a sheer waste of energy. Phase 4 is connected to phase 2.
10
Phase 4 - 2 To keep the learners focused, please pay attention to interaction: Interaction while exploring the subject Interaction during practice Interaction during application Discussion: What is interaction?
11
Phase 5 Practising the problems you have learnt today.
It´s the teacher’s choice how to do this: All by yourself In couples or small groups of learners Guided by the teacher Note: There are intellectual differences between learners. Please give the smart learners the opportunity to start at an earlier stage with their ´today problems´!
12
Phase 6 - 1 Evaluation. You will have to check if learners understand well what you, the teacher, told them today. Classroom interview: Please put open questions! What was difficult today and why was it difficult? Avoid closed questions: Was it difficult today? …. Answer is yes or no!
13
Phase 6 -2 Evaluation If your learners use workbooks to do their sums, it is possible to look after these workbooks. Checking workbooks: Do it at random. Don´t check them all. Make notes in your private administration what learners you checked. Pay attention to all learners over a given period of time
